- ‘Spuntino’, more than a snack

I wanted to take a few pictures last week-end while I was Liverpool, I organized myself, found a few restaurants with good critics, nice websites (very important for me the website) before getting there. No luck, I didn’t book in advance and everything was full because of a big carnival-float with wooden-iron kind of giants parading in Liverpool the whole week-end. The streets were close and the restaurants fully booked. We ended up in a Turkish one (the first we found with a table available). It was not a great Turkish with delicious shish kebab, no… That one also served English breakfast, pizza… And house wine only, so weird wine that I asked them to change the bottle (maybe it was corked so badly that the wine taste like detergent ?), another bottle and same white spirit’s taste…

Anyway, to conclude, Liverpool was great but nothing to say about the food, at least for last week-end as I went there three years ago and food was very good, depends on how organized you are, that’s all… However in this post, a lot to say about ‘Spuntino in London’. Difficult at night as they don’t take any booking, I tried two times, different days and the waiting time was 45 min, difficult for some people, impossible for me as I hate to queue up. Two days ago, I was back to London, gave it a chance again and took my friend there for lunch. Easy, quiet, no queue, busy but not packed, perfect. If you have a look at the website, there is nothing but the opening hours and adress, no phone number, no menu, nothing… That’s why you want to go to ‘Spuntino’, you want to know what’s going on there and what the chef is doing that it can’t be written on the website… ‘Spuntino’ means snack in Italian but it’s a lot more. When I think snack I think jacket potato, fish and chips wrapped in paper or club sandwich… Here, it’s more sweet and savoury, unexpected and simple at the same time : ‘Pulled pork and pickled apple’ (beautiful) with cute shoestring fries while my friend ordered the radish, fennel and anchovy salad and the ribbon steak, radiccio, ricotta and basil. Not very big dishes but enough for lunch, New York old school style, very nice staff, not pretentious, no crazy prices even if it’s trendy, and in Soho, great spot for a lunch and probably a great one for dinner for people who are very patient. ‘Spuntino’ 61 Rupert Street, Soho W1D 7PW London.
