I have a lot of respect and admiration for chefs. Restaurants is my environment as I still have my full time job and my world is made with sommeliers, bartenders, waiters, restaurateurs and chefs. With all the respect I have for them, I still think that you have to be crazy to be a chef. It is such a hard job that you have to be passionate…and crazy. When Italk about crazy chef I immediately think about Anthony Bourdain. I read one of his book, ‘Kitchen Confidential’. Four years ago I was continuously on UKTVFood when I was at home, that’s when I discovered him. He had his TV show where he travels the world and tastes different dishes, ingredients, very often weird stuffs. Very bad first impression on him. He is American, he smoked like a fire man and drank beers only. Don’t get me wrong, I love American people and I know that they can cook as well as any other nationalityin the world (at least some of them). But yes, my thoughts were : How can you be a chef and still get the taste of ingredients when you smoke that much ? I tried to find out more about him and learnt that he is the executive chef of ‘Brasserie Les Halles’ in  New-York. My ex-boss who is a food guru, advised me to read hisbook as it was, according to him, a great one. I forgot about all my prejudices and read the book. He was right, I loved it! After 25 years of sex, drug and haute cuisine, he tells all. From his first oyster in Gironde when he fell in love with food, to his lowly position as a dishwasher, then Tokyo, Paris… The way he talks about food, his wife (it’s never easy to be a chef’s wife), people in his restaurant which he calls his family… is just beautiful. A man’s life, a crazy one, who absolutely loves what he is doing. This book is for food lovers of course but also those who want to know more about the food industry, backstage side, people who’d like to open a restaurant and learn why it is not something everybody can do, then for those who would like to know more about Anthony Bourdain whose I am sure, will end up to really like him.
